... and some Very Odd Ones

Over the years I have done some strange crosses.

This was Sunflower's seventh litter, sired by Arolan Blue Smenkhare, a Blue Abyssinian. There were three red boys, two cream boys, a blue tortie and a lilac tortie. A cream boy and the lilac tortie girl went to Pam Evely, who wanted to breed a new line of sex-linked red Abyssinians.

SkybluepinkThe blue tortie, Skybluepink, stayed here and I showed her in the AOV classes, where she was quite successful.

The other cream boy was shown by a friend of mine as a neuter in the AOV classes.

And these are the 'Tonks'.

The gene which produces the Recessive White cats is fully recessive to Siamese and fully recessive to full colour - i.e. Siamese or Orientals which carry it look exactly the same as normal Siamese or Orientals.

The Burmese gene is also fully recessive to full colour - Asian selfs do not look any different if they carry Burmese - but it is incompletely dominant to Siamese, so that a cross between Siamese and Burmese produces a Tonkinese, in-between in colour.

Tonks
TonksSo far as we knew, nobody had done a mating to see if Burmese was completely dominant to Recessive White or not. So for Flossie's third litter I mated her to Arolan Brown Tiger, a Brown Burmese, and got the answer - a litter of four brown and one chocolate 'Tonkinese'.
Flossie's fifth litter was sired by Denka Prince Odarkness ('Dumbo'), a red Devon Rex. One of these, Palantir Tiddles, a Choc Tortie Devon Rex Variant, went to live with Dumbo's breeder, Venita Cook, and produced some Devons for her, so there may still be some Devon Rex around carrying the Recessive White gene. (Unfortunately I couldn't find a photo of Tiddles)
