Been there, done that ...

... and I've probably got the T-shirt somewhere.

This is Skewbald Scherzo, born in April 1971 and registered as parents unknown, but....

... when a breeder gave up and wanted to home her cats, a friend of mine took on a well-bred Seal Point queen, supposedly in kitten to a well-bred Seal Point stud. However, soon after the kittens were born she was horrified to find she had what she first thought were Tortie Points - until she realised some were males... and they were actually white-spotted.

The explanation, we suspect, was as follows. When my friend went to collect the Seal Point queen she saw various cats running around the place, including what looked like a Red Point male. She was told he was the result of a mating between the well-bred Seal Point stud and a Tortie & White half-Siamese. We suspect that he was actually Red Point & White (un-noticed on his pale coat) and that he was the sire of the kittens. However, out of respect for her well-bred mother, and because we really could not be sure who her father was, 'Phot' was registered as parents unknown.
PhotI couldn't resist her. In those days (prior to October 1971) a cat of unknown parentage could not only be registered, but shown as well.... and Phot did very well in the 'Any Other Variety' classes.

I mated her to Dandycat Ivanhoe, an Oriental Lilac - although in those days they, too, were 'Any Other Variety'!

The somewhat disappointing result was one Black and one Cream Point - both males.

I decided to mate her to a Cornish Rex on the basis that most colour schemes were acceptable there, but unfortunately instead of a litter she had a womb infection and had to be spayed. She then continued her show career as a neuter.

Here she is sharing her bed with Cirion and 'Parvati'. Parvati was a black daughter of Southview Pavane, the first Oriental Cinnamon to be registered with GCCF. Unfortunately, Parvati died soon after I had her (probably of FIP) so I did not breed any Cinnamons until much later. The next year I took over another Pavane daughter, Southview Prisma, a Havana; unfortunately she never called and hated other cats anyway, so she was rehomed to a pet home.

TicklesI also had various other Orientals over the years.

This is Phaeon Phairantickles, a Lilac Oriental Spotted Tabby, sired by Solitaire Ptolemy, with her 1975 litter from Southview Quando. She had a Brown Spotty, a Black and a Havana, but the Siamese with them actually belonged to one of Sunflower's daughters, Laurelin, who was not inclined to look after her.

I also acquired a strange Red Point. Ilona Chimaera's parents were both Red Points - Catherston Phun and Catherston Holly - but she had one tortie foot. (She was genetically a mosaic)

It would have been interesting to see if her offspring were prone to strange genetics, but it was not to be. Unfortunately, although 'Blot' was mated three times, to two different studs, she never carried a litter to term, so she was spayed.

These odd tortie feet crop up now and then. An Oriental Red son of Palantir Tom Bombadil also had one: his breeder thought it was dirt at first and tried to clean it off!
